Just sent this to Plant-exchange list and thought it wouldn't do
any harm to mail it to Seeds-list as well.

Jeremy
Seed of Eleutherococcus senticosus (Acanthopanax s.) seems to have an
immature embryo, which means it needs a warm stratification. The
procedure worked best by me is: first a 2-3 months' cold chilling, which
can be done by sowing outdoors between late fall and mid winter. Then
a 3-6 months' warm stratification, which also comes through sowing in
May or June. The third step is to cold-stratify the seeds then for 3-6
months or the same by leaving the trays sowed outdoors through winter.
The result should be a prompt germination, but as you see, only after
one year. The first cold chilling, I've found benefical, may also be just
for absorbing water, which could apparently be done by soaking in water
a day or two.
The easiest way, though, is to let the nature take care of the process
by sowing outdoors late fall or winter, perhaps even April or May - and
to wait until next spring.
Mustila Arboretum has been the source of A. senticosus seed in Finland
since long. If you'd e-mail me privately I could try to find you some.
