I think they germinated for me indoors under lights without
stratification. The seeds were barely covered and I just used regular
potting soil. If the seeds are set outside, I don't think they will
sprout until the weather really warms up (60's and 70's). It has been a
few years since I dealt with these seeds--I have about 2 dozen plants
and pull out any offspring that I find. The goldfinches especially love
these seeds but unfortunately don't eat them all.
In spite of a tap root on mature plants that heads for the center of the
earth, I have successfully dug and transplanted plants that were about 2
yrs old. The root seems to react like a dandelion and regenerates a new
plant if you try to get rid of a mature plant.
