Dear Karen,
It really depends on the specific seeds you are sowing. Some need 40, some
70, and some a 'cycle' (3 months) of each, and in a specific order. These
'cycles' represent Summer and Winter seasons, hence the idea behind the 3
month times. Also: The above is assumng you are not trying to grow
'tropical' seeds....if you were, it would probably *never* be a 40 degree
cycle.
We usually use the refrigerator as our 'personal weather pattern', (as
compared to the outdoors) because it's always 40 degrees. When space is a
problem, and the seeds large enough, we just place them in moist paper
towels, inside folded over plastic produce (like you get veggies in from
the grocery store) bags. They then take up virtually no space and are easy
to view (to tell if germination has occured). It also makes them easy to
handle for 'cycling' from warm to cold or vice versa.
