Iris seeds have a growth inhibitor to stop them germinating in the fall
after they are ripe. I tie mine in an old piece of panty hose and tie
them in the toilet tank for a couple of weeks before planting. If you
don't like the sound of this, put them in a bowl and change the water
daily for a couple of weeks. Don't worry about floating/sinking to the
bottom, plant them all.
