I find A. taquetii 'Superba' and A. chinensis 'Pumila' seed around pretty
freely in the garden, but none of my others do this. So if you want to
experiment with seed, these would probably be easy ones. I've never
planted them (the seeds) on purpose.
I'd suggest you buy some plants for starters -- Bluestone --
http://websites.oib.com/bluestone/makemain.cgi -- offers 4 varieties at 3
for about $8.50 which isn't a bad price. They will be young liners and
probably not bloom for a year or so, but should be healthy
plants....leastwise the plants I've ordered from them in the past have
always been. These aren't too exotic, but seem to be a range of colors.
BTW, I don't have any financial interest in Bluestone :-) But just
reviewed their site in my latest article, so they were on my mind .

Are astilbes easily propogated by seed? They are on my wish list but I
don't know if I want to grow them from seed or just buy them & divide them
later.
