I have found that D. pulcherimum and D. igneum germinate well at room temperature
in paper towels. They can be slow (fresher seed is faster); if they take longer
than a month, I give them cold treatment in the refrigerator for a few weeks,
and keep alternating until most have germinated. I grow both species, as well as
the Slieve Donard hybrids of D. pulcherimum, with no problems. Thompson and
Morgan sells the latter; D. igneum comes from a garden in Victoria, BC.
