I have encountered this problem again and again. I generally leave the
seedling alone and it soon breaks free of its shell. I have, in the past,
tried removing the shell and ended up harming the seedling. It has been my
experience that a bigger, sturdier seedling that hasn't broken free of its
shell can withstand some gentle assistance from the gardener's steady hand.
