This Calif. native is notorious for being difficult to propagate from seeds,
but I've taken up the challenge. I've had a batch of seed stratifying in the
fridge with damp peat moss for 1 1/2 months. Book opinions vary on when to
remove them (2-3 months), so I'm doing a germination test with a few of them
now, on paper towels with bottom heat, and will do so every two weeks until I
see some activity. I've heard that viability is low, so it is important to
sow them thickly. What else should I know? Would a few days in the freezer
be beneficial? A good soak in hot water?
If there is anyone who has successfully grown this species from seed, I would
be more than grateful if you would kindly pass along any tips or suggestions
about what worked well for you.
Thank you in advance for your ideas, C. Carter, CA/Z9
