I would not assume the seed starting mix is sterile unless the bag says so.
To help eliminate possible pathogens, many folks pour boiling water over
their soilless mix, let it cool and then plant in it.  I have only done that
with Begonia and Gesneriad seeds.  Perennial seeds get the mix straight from
the bag.  I think it is reasonable to say that the mix in the bag is "clean"
rather than sterile.  The other important factor is to use new pots and
flats or used ones that have been scrubbed and soaked for a bit in a 10%
chlorine solution.
