Generally, yes. Though you need to be sure you have virus-free scions if
you do. Cultivated apples can carry a number of viruses that don't harm
them, but can seriously harm or kill the crab apple rootstock. There are
some good crab apples that are also edible, too. For example, I have one
from Nels Hansen in South Dakota that looks like a small Red Delicious apple
with red flesh. It makes good red or pink sauce and cooks well.
