The Merck Index indicates oxine is 8-hydroxyquinoline and it appears
this is sold in Canada as the benzoate salt. Eastman Kodak and Aldrich
Chemical both sell 8-hydroxyquinoline as the hydrochloride but these
companies will not sell to individuals. An academic contact got the
chemical for me as I have used it for years on orchid seedlings just out
of flask. The OAS Handbook of Orchid Pests and Diseases 1990 issue
recommends the agent for a variety of fungal infections.
Oxine is a phenol and is thus related to ortho-phenylphenol which was
for years the active agent in Lysol but seems to be replaced by
quaternary ammonium agents similar to Physan. One wonders why as Lysol
was for years a standard antibacterial. Ortho-phenylphenol is the active
ingredient of Natriphene (Dowcide) an agricultural fungicide.
