Germinating Seeds Outside

Isabelle...

The only seeds you can germinate outside are those that need to be stratified
and it's okay for them to freeze (mine are outside in Zone 5 and it gets below
zero). My seeds are in 4 1/2 in. square plastic pots in trays on a north
facing porch where they get all the weather but no direct sunlight. Right now
they have a couple inches of snow on them and it's 24 degrees F. I cover my
pots with 2 layers of clear plastic wrap and seal it with masking tape. If it
breaks in the spring (water settles on top of the pots when the snow melts)
and the medium gets soaked, it doesn't seem to bother the seeds, but I do
remove the plastic wrap (so the water can drain out of the bottom of the pot)
and put just one layer of plastic wrap over the top of the pot secured with a
rubber band. This has been most successful for me. If your poly cover
doesn't let in light, any seeds needing light will not germinate. I like my
pots individually wrapped so I can remove the ones that germinate to a
different location in the spring (a shady south facing porch) and I like the
clear plastic so I can observe the pot without any fuss. Hope this helps.
