If you mean what kind of growing medium, I use a combination of peat
and a little vermiculite. It's a commercial mixture by Scott's and I
generally use it right out of the bag for seeds. For cuttings I add
more vermiculite and perlite for good drainage. Sand can also be
added. Just be sure for both cuttings and seeds to use a non-soil mix
so there are no disease pathogens.
Once the seedlings are being potted up or the cuttings have struck
roots, it's OK to add some sterile potting soil to the mix.
This system has worked well for me in my small nursery.
