Susan,I had to think back on how/what I did to learn what I have (which
is and never will be enough ).I have no formal education in botany or
such, but I do avail myself of all the better catalogs that I can
possibly get. They almost never charge for them and even then its
sometimes worth it as they have marvelous pictures, common names and
(this is what makes them "better")the latin names as well..Try: Thompson
and Morgan,Wayside Gardens,White Flowers, all free .I know there are
many in your own Canada as well.
We all know what looks good to us(pictures)armed with both names we can
now shop around, ask questions etc.Its a bewildering subject & if one
does not have the correct name(and trust me only Latin is the reliable
route)it becomes only more so.Common names vary from region to region so
that kind of tells the story.
What type of plants interest you most perhaps I could steer you on to
some good cats.to read up on?
My interests (and now a business also plant related) are such that I
have a wide range of reference books which are necessary for my research
and assurance that I am getting exactly what I need/want when I place an
order.I realize you and most people cant do that but the public library
has wonderful sources of info (everything I wish I could afford as
well).
We all have to start somewhere and if your desire is really great you'll
know it because the more you know the more you'll want to know.
" For those of you who have the resources and time, would it be
possible for you to refer to both botanical and common name when
posting"
I would be happy to do the above. And just remember to do the same when
you gain all that knowledge and forget you ever felt that you wouldnt!!
