Monterey pines have pretty roundish cones but the cones stay on the branch
and are very hard to pull off. THe name reason the latin for the Monterey
Pine is Pinus radiata is because the cones are arranged radially from the
branch. they encircle the branches. These seeds are fairly easy to grow,
after the 85" pebble beach fire here, the seeds from the pines sprouted
quickly. In several months you could see up close pine seedling all over the
hill sides. Monterey pines are fast growers. The young pines from that fire
are about ten to fifteen feet high now. Although thses pines are not
resistant to pitch canker fungus and only about 15% have any resitence.
Twenty years from now our native forest of pines will become mostly dead
trees and oak/ buckeye woodland.
THought this would be of some help,
BJ
