Probably the simplest method to check for dead seed, is to put a few
seeds in water from the tap, place in a warm, light spot for a couple of
days. Dead seed, chaff, etc., usually develops a fuzz of mold, easily
visible with a lens in bright light.
I noticed this when I used porcelain laboratory spotting dishes with shallow
cells that for GA3 treatment of seeds. but any suitable container could
be used.
