  Deciduous azaleas:
  Sow on surface of fine peat and keep in 100 % moist thru covering
  with clear plastic or glas. Give the pots light 10 to 18 h per day;
  natural daylight also does. Germination should happen in two to three
  weeks.
  Calycanthus occidentalis, if and when (?) comparable with C. floridus:
  Give a cold-stratification before sowing by mixing the seeds with medium
  like peat/sand, peat/vermiculite or those without peat, or peat/perlite.
  Put the mixture into a plastic bag after moistening and let the bags
  stay for three, or so, months in 2 to 5 deg C; in the fridge e.g.
  You may also sow the seeds and let the trays get same kind temperatures.
  To my mind the climate of N. Ireland would allow sowing outside, too,
  thus giving the chilling needed.
  Keep the sowings til the next spring; some seeds won't germinate first
  spring.
