Japanese maples get leaf burn from wind. They need to grow in sheltered
places here. Also, they grow wild in a country that is green and moist
in the summer, and dry and sunny in the winter. One of the oddest things
for me was seeing all the grass brown and dormant all winter, the exact
opposite of conditions on the Pacific coast of North America.
