Re: Saxifraga columnaris and dinnikinsii

From: Robert Stewart <stewart@LIVINGONLINE.COM>

We sow all our saxifrages except the mossies in pots filled with
50-50 sunshine mix and pearlite. We water in the mix and then grit with
a thick layer of chick starter grit .36-.5 deep. We sow the saxifrages
directly on top of the grit and water in lightly to wash the seed down,
and place the pots in a minimally heated (35-40F) white poly covered
house and wait. GA3 causes immediate germination but we don't use it
because the seedlings are too strechy and difficult to grow on. This
should work fine for Saxifraga columnaris and dinnikinsii. It works for
everything else. Growing on the tiny seedlings may prove more of a
problem than germinating them however. They are tiny and easily overrun
by mosses and liverworts and need additional care in watering at first.
