I live on Clear Lake in Northern California. We are in zone 8, which
means that temperatures can go below 20 F. for many days at winter
solstice time. This is the southern edge of wetter North America and we
have heavy rainfall which leaches our soils, mostly of calcium. Our
summer temperatures exceed 100 F. for many weeks during the summer. I
raise Pacific Giants and they manage fairly well in a bed that is in
full, scorching sun. It is a fairly new bed and has only been amended
with compost once or twice. I mulch all of my beds with mushroom
compost and water daily in summer with soaker hoses. My delphiniums
while neither as lush or as tall (3-4 feet) as I would like, still put
on a very good show of blooms all summer and well into fall.
