I'm looking for germination information for Abutilon, Brugmansia, and
Acnistus australis. I've read recommendations that Abutilon seeds may be
soaked or have their seed coats nicked. Should both be done, or is it an
either/or proposition? How do I avoid damaging the embryo if I decide to
nick the seed coats? How do you know when you've gone deep enough?

Margaret:
According to Deno:
Abutilon theophrasti germ 100% in 2 days at 70 if an opening is ground through the seed coat. If the opening is not made, germination ranges from 5-25% and takes place erratically over 1-10 weeks whether sown at 70 or in outdoor treatment. Prof. Roger Koide of Penn State Univ. found that germination is immediate if the seed is immersed in water at 140 for 10 minutes.

Thompson & Morgan have Brugmansia as 21-60 days at 65 to 70F.

T& M have Acnistus at 21-60 days at 60-70F.
Hope this helps.
