If you can spare any of the seed, cut a few to see if they are empty or not.
Some plants produce seed that floats no matter what it's viability. Many
iris are native to wet areas and would likely have floating seed to help it
disperse. Also, I have had seed (not iris) that I KNEW was viable, but it
would float when dry, even though it sank when fresh.
