Re: Ferraria crispa

Hi there Lillian,

I grow quite a lot of Cape bulbs from seed. Generally with Ferraria I
expect germination within three to four weeks of sowing. I sow the seeds
on a soil based compost, covered with a quarter inch of sharp grit with
bottom heat giving seventy degrees.

They are not hardy in any real sense. I live in an area which is roughly
equivalent to yours and grow them in a cold greenhouse. I find that they
can take a degree or two of frost without damage, but not more. To flower
them well, keep them frost free, in a very well drained compost, with
plenty of light. Dry through the summer months and water well from
September onwards. Stop watering as soon as they flower.

For my money, they are one of the most beautiful flowers of all, though my
tastes are not necessarily yours. They are very reminiscent of frilly
Leopard skins if you can imagine that!
Best Regards,
David Victor
