Hi Todd:
I had luck with the horsechestnut simply by raking them into a pile then
leaving them over winter after a week or two of warm weather in spring I
uncovered the pile to find several had germinated. Someone suggested
that perhaps they give off a gas that stimulates germination. Wanda
