potting on

There is definitely an optimum time to do pot on. We prick out into
cell trays and pot on into 9cm pots just as soon as the root ball
will come out without disintegrating. We then pot on before the plant
starts to show signs of stress (in theory anyway)

As well as wondering how long a plant should be left before potting
on I am interested in how big a pot on can be made and the
balance between giving enough room and too much. Aspects such as the
changing microclimate ( speed of soil cooling/warming, humidity
levels, drying out, air movement etc) and their balance against the
labour cost (monetary or otherwise) of potting on and/or spacing.
It seems there is a vast range of possibilities for control and
growth optimization/retarding here, not just for the commercial grower
but the home gardener too.

I have large flowering Kale in my vege/flower garden now (just
planted out of 17cm pots) and very tiny flowering kale that were
surplus to requirements and remained in the cell trays.
