Re: Propagation Mailing list Survey? - listowner

I would like to see more discussion on intricate and difficult seed. Would
like to know who out there is interested in growing plants more from seed
than cloning. I strive for plants that look different instead of having that
plantation look to my nursery. There is more of a chance of finding new
plants to select by seed growing. Many people are afraid of this though.
Seeds are not always easy: they often sporadically germinate, sometimes they
need acid or physical scarification, stratification, soaking, seedling
sometimes have damping off problems...but some of us thrive on the
challenge. I am also a botanist. I find that collecting seed from plants in
cultivation or in the wild has taught me a thing or two about them that I
otherwise may have missed. Just tonight as I was collecting seed of Ruellia
peninsularis, I accidentally pulled on the abdomen of a green spider. His
rear was mimicking the green seeds of this plant, in fact he pointed it up
just like the seeds are. His legs looked like the withered corolla of the
capsule. I wouldn't have noticed this had I not been after the seed at dusk!
Anyway, I would like to see what creative seed treatment methods people are
using for certain plants.

While we are on the subject, I need to understand why I am failing at
germinating seeds of Moringa oleifera. They just rot on me. I am collecting
them fresh from a single plant here on campus which seeds prolifically every
year.
