Get a copy of "The Reference Manual of Woody Plant Propagation by Dirr
and Heuser, Varsity Press, ISBN 0-942375-00-9. It gives propagation
information on over 1000 species, varieties, cultivars that is accessable to
the serious amateur. Taxus, Erica, Calluna and some Junipers can be rooted in
a simple to construct cold frame that gets no direct sun, generally in a
peat/sand or peat/perlite rooting medium. Some rooting hormone packages have
excellent instructions and there may be net-resources.
