Re: using botanical and common names

Well, over the years I've accumulated a fair library of references and
garden reading material, but there are four books I find I grab first when
I need to look something up:

"Manual of Woody Landscape Plants" by Michael A. Dirr - a new edition is
just out....mine is falling to pieces.

"Wyman's Gardening Encyclopedia" by Donald Wyman. Mine is the 1986
edition - there may be a more recent one.

"Perennials for American Gardens" by Ruth Rogers Clausen and Nicolas H.
Ekstrom. Mine is a 1989 edition, but I'm assuming it's still available.

"Hortus Third" by the Staff of the L. H. Bailey Hortorium, Cornell
University. Published in 1976, it is getting a bit dated, but still about
the most comprehensive list of plants cultivated in the US and Canada. It
lists at an astronomical price, but can be had for very little on joining
book clubs or second hand.
