Warren,
Looks wonderful ! If I were 150 miles further south in subtropical Kerry, I
might be tempted ....
RHS AtoZ says: Originate from lower mountain slopes (might suggest a need
for free-draining soil ???) in tropical Africa and Asia. Fast growing
banana-like perennial with leaves to 6metres ... (doublechecked!) long.
height to 20' or more. Frost tender, minimum 7degrees C. Recommends growing
in humus rich soil in full sun or partial shade. Lift plunged plants
before first frost, cutting back long roots and reducing top growth to no
more than the newest 2 or three leaves. When grown indoors recommends
loam-based potting compost and shade from hot sun,
and keeping well ventilated. Watch for red-spider mite and aphid
infestation.
