Re: Harry Lauder's Walking Stick

Reproducing the tree by suckers depends on if it was on it's own roots or
not. Here in Oregon all hazlenuts are reproduced by layering or stooling,
but apparently Harry Lauder's Walking Stick is sometimes reproduced by
grafting. If the suckers from the existing tree are not contorted, they may
be from a rootstock, and will not give you what you want. It is possible to
air-layer the tree, if you are patient. Wrap a wire around a fairly small
diameter woody shoot and twist it tight, but not tight enough to actually
cut the bark. Put the shoot through the bottom hole of a two gallon or
larger pot so the wired section is in the pot. Fill the pot with soil and
keep it moist. As the shoot grows, it is girdled, forcing it to root to
survive. After a full season (start in early spring) it should be rooted
and can be cut loose. Otherwise, try a nursery like Heronswood or
ForestFarm for another one.
