Residents of W MT or E ID

My husband and his parents were on a road trip to the west coast.  In
western Montana and eastern Idaho, they say many shrubs growing along
the roadside that were all in yellow flowers. The sample they brought
back appears to have the flowers along a stem with no leaves.  It grew
like a weed for that area.  Are there any residents on this list that
are in that area and could tell me what the shrub/weed is?
