Some of the best ones:
1) Linc Foster, Rock Gardening
2) The New York Boranical Gardens, Rock Gardening (part of its "The
Serious Gardener" series and just out)
3) Bird & Kelly, The Complete Book of Alpine Gardening
If you read those three books on construction and maintenance, you'll
learn most of what you can get from books. Then, both fortunately and
unfortunately, comes that enlightening "experience" part.
