Dear Don:
I use boiling hot water on seeds very successfully. If the seeds need
to be soaked I always start with boiling water. The soilless seed
starting mix is premoistened but the newly planted seeds are always
bottom watered with boiling water until the surface of the topdressing
appears wet.
Don, yes I use boiling water. My germination rate is pretty high. The
boiling water is just part of a regime of pots cleaned with
disinfectant, clean work areas. Our grandparents always used boiling
hot water for seed starting; they believed it helped prevent some soil
and seed born diseases.
Best, Vicki
