germinating Calycanthus and other shrubs

Hi everyone,

Flushed with success from my attempts to germinate what must have been
easy plants, I am now trying to germinate Calycanthus floridus (Carolina
Allspice), Ceanothus americanus (New Jersey Tea), Ilex verticillata
(Winterberry Holly). These, I find, are a bit tricker (sp?)

These plants required a 3 months cold period which I gave them
in a soilles mix in the refrigerator. I took them out just 1 month ago
and set them under lights where temperature was approximately 50-60 degrees.
After a few weeks with no results, I placed them in my propagating box
with a bottom heat of about 70 degrees where they were until a few days
ago, again with no results. They are currently in a north window where
they get better air circulation (a.k.a. less moss).

I've been pretty careful not to let them dry out, and the seeds came
from a reliable source (the New England Wildflower Society).

I did however germinate Rosa virginiana alba (Virginia Rose) using this
method, although the rate of germination was very poor - 1 seed out of 5.

Any comments to point me on the road to success would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Gail
