Here in the UK, all the chocolate cosmos are the same clone and none
has ever been known to set seed - it must be self-sterile. Here it is
propagated by tissue culture for sale as a patio plant in garden
centres.
The chocolate cosmos is extinct in the wild (South America) and the
botanists at Kew Gardens have put out a call asking for news of anyone
who has a plant which does set seed. I'm interested to hear too, and
am in touch with the appropriate people at Kew, so if anyone has such
a plant get in touch with me.
Here, in zone 8, it is only hardy in well drained soil in front of
sunny walls so why it dies out in warmer zones is a mystery - although
it may not appear above ground until June.
