Liatris need a cold moist period, length of time varies with the species.
I put mine in damp sphagnum moss or in a damp paper towel, then in a
baggie, then in the fridge. It usually takes 4-6 wks. Then I toss the
bags on the kitchen counter, out of the sun, and check them every day.
When seeds germinate, I transplant the seeds to pots.
I do all this in the winter, so outside is not a possibility. I do put the
perennial seedlings outside after the last frost, but they are generally
large enough not to dry up within the first couple of hours.
All of this is time consuming, but I have more time than available space
for the seeds that don't germinate. And during the long, cold, grey winter
months, its nice to futz with the seeds and dream of the summer.
