Ron,
John Vanderplank's book "Passion Flowers" 176 pages 1991 first edition MIT
press ISBN 0-262-22043-1 in Chapter 4 "Propagation" pages 43 & 44 states:
"Either soak the seeds in warm water (21-27 C, 70-80 F) for 24 hours
before sowing them or buy a fresh passion fruit of any spiecies, remove the
seeds, extract them from the juice and pulp with a household seive and then
mix your newly purchased seeds with the juice of the fresh fruit. This
mixture should be left in a warm place for 24 hours before sowing the
seeds, still mixed with the juice and pulp. Although it is a little messy
and awkward to cover the mixture evenly with compost, it improves the
prospects of germination dramatically...Sometimes a mould will grow from
the pulp surrounding the seeds but I have never known this to harm the
seeds or hinder germination." "The most important consideration is that the
compost should be well-drained and aerated. I use a mixture of peat and
vermiculite for all spiecies..." "Use the old 'rule of thumb' and sow the
seed as deep as the seed is wide - small seed 2 mm deep, large seed 5 mm
deep."
I have heard of using orange juice when fresh passion fruit juice is not
available, and have used this myself. Another opinion was that if the seed
are fresh just to plant them, but if the seeds have been stored for a few
months then to resort to soaking as aforementioned.
