This is a tricky one: On the one hand, it is great to see the young
writers developing an interest in gardening at such an early age, and
using this medium to get information, and we certainly want to encourage
them. On the other hand, if this venue, Propagation, is going to be
principled, it ought to deal in good information. Therefore, to avoid
disappointment, at the least the writers ought to be advised that the
(experiment) will be entertaining and educational, but that the
likelihood of them getting a tree that will bear Edible apples is almost
nil.
(To quote Frances Tenenbaum's review of Michael Pollan's book "The Botany
of Desire" in the March/April 2002 Horticulture magazine: "any serious
gardener knows you can't grow an edible apple from seed.")
But as to getting an Apple tree (Malus) regardless of edibility, the
American Horticulture Society A - Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants says
"sow seed in seedbed in autumn." implying that a period of cold is
required for germination. Presumably this could be satisfied indoors
with a period in the freezer, but for how long? At least their potting
soil should be OK.
