Re: Itty -Bitty transplants

Hi Karen,

RE: bulb/corm seedlings. I generally DO NOT transplant them until the
second growing season. The small bulb, stem and roots are quite fragile
and easily damaged. For this reason I sow thinly so that they may grow for
a year in the original container, 4 inch pot or 5 inch deep propagation
flat. There are of course exceptions but this is my general rule-of-thumb.

Most lily species will adjust the depth of the bulb on their own via
contractile roots, seeking stable soil temps so it is better not to
transplant them too deeply. An inch down in a loose compost is fine.

Cyclamen tubers are for the most part surface or near-surface structures so
don't bury them much at all. See the excellent information at the Cyclamen
Soc. Web site for care.

Your hypericum seed was sown way too thickly. One danger besides damage in
transplanting is the increased risk of damping off. Best way to handle
this is to break the mat into small pieces and plant each chunk in a 4 inch
pot for example. When the seedlings have developed further you can
separate them some more. In general you keep the stronger few in each
clump and the rest are sacrificed .

>From this hopefully you will learn not to sow to thickly in the future.

My 2 cents on this.

Best of Luck

Scott
