Duncan, I "wing it" like you do, but I have found one winging-it method that
seems to work fairly well which I'll share.
I recently acquired some itty-bitty seed from a Hebe speciosa 'Imperialis'.
I poured the seed onto a white sheet of paper so it wasn't all clumped
together. Then I took my index finger and pressed it down onto the seed so
that the seeds would stick to my finger. Then, with a pencil in my other
hand, I used its sharp point to nudge the seeds off of my finger and onto the
sowing medium.
The seeds have all germinated now and although in spots I've got two
seedlings growing very close together, generally they're distributed with
manageable spacing between them. Just remember - don't sneeze while doing
this, and if you're working outside, it better be a dead-calm day!
I'll enjoy reading about other's methods as well. C. Carter
