What I've found too often to be the case is that seed catalogs, and seed
packets, give slightly or completely wrong instructions. As a case in
point, I recently wrote to a famous international seed company to inform
them of some truly dismal germination results I'd had recently with their
seed. One of their staff horticulturists wrote me back a very nice letter
outlining a set of germination instructions that differed in some very
critical points from the packet instructions. (For example, her note
suggested a prechill for Lobelia tupa instead of the straight sowing at 75
which the packet indicated, and which had gotten me only one (!) seedling
from 100 seeds.) Admittedly there are seed catalogs which convey better
advice than this one, but I've seen others whose suggestions are equally
invalid. So my advice is, when you're dealing with what the seed companies
say, caveat emptor.
