Hi y'all:
I am fairly new to this list and have been just lurking for some time.
On the subject of sowing fine seeds, I happen to do volunteer work at
the South Carolina Botanical Garden, located near hear at Clemson
University. This spring "we" have sown a 'gazillion' seeds and have
already transplanted over 12,000 seedlings.
For sowing seeds, other than an automated vaccumn device, we use a small
plastic seed sower that has three basic parts, 1. a handle, 2. the
business end and 3. a ratchet wheel. The handle is a handle is a
handle. The business end is a "v" shaped end similar to what you get
shen you fold a piece of paper. This "v" shaped end also has raised
barriers accross the "v", similar to the ubiquitious speed bumps. The
ratchet is simply a wheel that is attched to a mechaism inside that
causes the devise to mini-jump as the wheel is turned. For small seeds
we file down the "speed bumps" to allow them to "jump" over easier, and
we use an old device, one that the ratchet is somewhat worn down. This
seems to be a neat devise.
We also use, although not as much, a "Dial Seed Sower" where you dial
the seed size and provide a ratched action by tapping your finger.
These are available from Gardeners Supply Company for $5.00 or from
Territorial Seed Co. for $4.00. I'm sure others sell them too.
I sow a significant number of begonia seed, some of which are like
dust. Orchid seeds are even worse...smallest seeds in the world. First
I get my RN wife to bring home a surgical mask so my breath won't
inadvertantly send seeds-a-flying. If no surgical mask then hold your
breath. I then simply use a folded piece of white paper and gently sow
over the tray or flat.
Sorry, didn't mean for my first posting to be so long...
