We haven't noticed a problem with this plant in zone 9 (coastal
Louisiana). If its not moved inside during the winter it will die back.
Even on the gulf coast we get down to freezing in the winter, not for very
long, but long enough to kill down a lot of plants. The Sprengeri I had
outside never came back after two days of temperatures in the 20's. My
sister-in-law (50 miles north in zone 8) moves hers into a greenhouse for
the winter and has never had a problem with it.
I have, however, seen it growing wild along the roadside in frost free
areas, and understand that it could become a pest in such a location. I have
always loved this plant and have trouble seeing it as a pest, but I guess it
depends on what zone you are in.
