Different Aquilegia species have different requirements for germination.
Most of them are rather easy, but they need usually 2-6 weeks to germinate.
Aquilegia caerulea and cultivars is very easy without any cold treatment or
anything. Sow them in trays or pots filled with sowing compost, and cover
the seeds with a very thin layer of grit. The same method can be used for
most species, like A. canadensis, A. clematiflora, A. vulgaris etc. There
are a few exceptions; most of them should be sown in 0-5 C, and germination
might be very slow. This method should be used for A. flabellata, A. atrata
and some others. Nora Barlow germinated in my greenhouse a few weeks ago,
after 20 days in 15-22 C.
As for the rest of the list, it would be easier if you used latin names. But
Echinacea germinates usually fast and easy without any treatment, while
Rudbeckia species usually are slow; from 2 to 5 weeks.
In a few days (I guess) there will be a database of germination methods for
perennials in my homepage in the adress below, as well as in the homepage of
Tom Clothier and others I guess. This list contains (at this moment)
germination data for more than 1300 different perennials. You are all free
to use it in any way you like, as long as you don't change the list, delete
the names of the people behind it, or take credit for it. It is my intention
to help people with germination data for perennials, since I think there is
a need for such information. Hope you all find it useful.
