Hi Anthony,
You were probably wise to change your growing medium. I use Hoffman's seed
starter and mix it with Premier ProMix. I find that the Hoffman's has too
much vermiculite to use straight. Once seeds have germinated, I transplant
with only ProMix or one of the Fafard products.
When you first plant your seeds, try using a top dressing of Milled Sphagnum
Moss, often called No-Damp. It does just that. There is something in the
sphagnum that prohibits the growth of the dampening off organism. Sometimes
I even sow very tiny seed right on top of it and then water in with a
sprayer and bottom watering. You also want to make sure that you have
adequate air circulation. Using a small fan in your propagating area helps.
