FW: Using a 10 gal. aquarium for seedlings

William
My only observation tracks the other advice about watching out for
fungus, circulation is a must. I have also noticed a significant
tendency to take fungus when I use peat in my soil mix or use peat pots.
I have since switched to other peat free mixtures like milled sphagnum
moss and vermiculite with lesser tendency to induce dampling off. Not
everybody has these same problems, but my basement is quite musty and
seems to have the fungus in every crook and cranny so I have to fight it
off even if I mind my sterile techniques since that's where my seed
starting trays are allowed.
A friend uses vermiculte only to initiate germination, then plucks the
little thing out into sterlie dirt mixes. He gets higher germination
than me, but I don't like to handle them so much.
As always, I'm here because no matter how much I know, much of
propagation is still a mystery and I can learn a lot by both asking and
telling (and being corrected or acknowledged).
