We use the same convention in my area. Evidently the grafting convention
is to cut the top of a piece of scion (which is a cutting) at an angle and
the bottom square. That way, everyone knows "which end is up," for
grafting or for rooting, even if your scion is traded or sold to someone
you don't know.
