COFFEE
In the past a grower from Brazil advised me that green coffee beans are
often just propagated by putting the beans into soil.
Yes, green coffee beans are either treated and or heated before processing
into drinking coffee.
Therefore you can not necessarily use the green beans which come from coffee
roaster.
Companies like the Banana Tree do sell untreated beans (quite inexpensive).
We received ours from the CA Rare Fruit Growers seed exchange which we
assume to be viable.
As far as ornamental plants, those which are sold in the US garden shops are
likely from seed since propagation from cuttings is quite slow and selection
of the cuttings must be made from the (top) apical part of the plant. Those
cuttings taken from lateral growth with have lateral growth characteristics
which might not make an esthetic plant.
Hontestly the coffee tree might be quite ugly when potted.
The older leaves quite often form a 'rust' and development of new lower
growth is difficult.
Development of a 'forest' in the pot with new plants being added is a good
alternative to having one tall stingy tree.
