In my personal experience, the above statement is 100% correct. Originally in
my gardening career, I used to put rocks at the bottom of the pots because
several books recommended that. It did nothing to enhance drainage or improve
anything. So, I stopped placing rocks, and the plants actually liked it.
Especially the African Violets thrived without them, but my cyclamen and other
house plants liked this too. I am only reporting my own experience and my
belief is that to obtain good drainage one needs the right mix of soil
formulated for the individual plants. That's why I buy "African Violet Soil"
for my African Violets from the nursery or garden center.
