Chris?
Most New Zealanders refer to their zone as "Godzone", being short
for "Gods own Country". While this may be somewhat blasphemous
it is non the less indicative of our climate in the north of the country
where we rarely get frosts, summers are warm and humid and the
resultant vegetation is lush and almost sub - tropical. Our
delphiniums do well in these conditions, particularly with a little tlc,
thought and a little catering to their sensibilities.
Most gardeners I know are adventurous souls who just love to sweat
and toil all year for the fleeting sight of beautiful and interesting
flowers which have repaid their labours sevenfold (at least). I have
had reports of our delphiniums growing very successfully in USA
zones 8 and 9, never mind zone 5 where they are grown with
considerable and frequent success. In fact, they are a big seller all
the way up the east coast. You may need to modify (with summer
shade) zone 5 in central USA but otherwise .... I suggest you try
them again .. real English Type Hybrids!
Bear in mind that many delphinium species are native to Oregon
and California and do well in zones 8 and 9. and btw .. what would
have happened if Christopher Columbus, Marco Polo and Bill
Clinton had all stayed in their own zones?
cheers

you did not mention your zone. delphiniums can't take much
summer heat. i
am in Zone 5, and our summers are too hot to grow them. they need
a cooler
climate. when growing a plant in the wrong climate (heat, sun,
shade, or
whatever) there is such a large chance of loosing the plant. it will
become stressed, (heat, shade, soil, whatever). it is best to plant the
proper plants for the proper Zone, climate, shade, sun,
soil,requirements,
etc. chris -----Original Message--
